When you are writing a persona statement for college, it is very different from how to write a personal statement for graduate school. The simple reason for this is because the graduate school is a level higher than college. So, because of this the weight age and importance of a personal statement increases too.
Now you might have read many articles and bogs on how to write a personal statement for graduate school but you probably haven’t come across many that tell you what not to write in a personal statement. Well, the purpose of my blog today is to tell you the things you shouldn’t be writing in a personal statement. These things are to be kept strictly away from your personal statement as they might spoil it completely.
1. The first rule of how to write a personal statement is never to use lame excuses for backup. You might be a student who didn’t achieve very good grades in college and are trying to cover it up by giving them silly excuses, but remember that the better approach here is to be straight forward and as sincere as possible.
2. Remember that this is a professional piece of writing and you cannot be over smart while writing it. Never add jokes or quips to make your personal statement seem more friendly or interesting. Instead try to win them over by your professionalism and communication style. A personal statement that is informal will never be accepted.
3. A very common mistake that students make is to suggest that the program will be better if they hire him/her. This is probably the worst mistake you could ever make because you have to keep in mind that it is you who has to be admitted in the school and not them. Rather than doing that, tell them how you can benefit from the program.
4. The last and perhaps another common error made in the personal statement is that of spelling and grammatical errors. Always check, recheck and then recheck again so that you can make sure that there is no such language error. You could also ask your friends and family to read it.
